Tampa Tribune calls for Maddox to drop out of Florida Governor's race

It's going to be hard to recover from mistakes like this and still win the nomination.  And if he does win, you know the republicans will talk about nothing but his mismanagement of the party.

After Bungling Party's Books, Maddox Deserves The Boot

Published: Jun 24, 2005

Given the Democratic Party's downward spiral in Florida politics, you might wonder what qualifies former state party chairman Scott Maddox to run for governor.
Now we learn that he can't manage a budget, either. Under his leadership, the state Democratic Party failed to pay employees' payroll and Social Security taxes, resulting in an IRS lien on party assets.

Maddox says he accepts responsibility, although he is quick to blame a bookkeeper. Still, if Maddox had the makings of a strong chief executive, he would have been asking probative questions, holding people accountable and managing the party to financial stability.

Instead, party activists are being asked to write checks to help dispose of the $200,000 tax lien. Another $900,000 may be missing from the state party treasury, although Maddox says that may be the result of a simple bookkeeping error.

Regardless, the former Tallahassee mayor's track record creates no confidence that he could manage a $63 billion state budget.

New Democratic Party Chair Karen Thurman, who must clean up this mess, says, ``I can tell you that according to the audit that was done, the internal controls in this office were absolutely, unequivocally the worst.''

The personable Maddox is a gifted speaker, and his fellow Democrats had hoped he would energize the party when they selected him chair more than two years ago. Even then, some worried that Maddox would use the office to advance his personal ambitions rather than rebuild a party that has lost the Governor's Mansion and holds minority status in the state House and Senate.

Their fears were realized. Maddox attracted publicity for himself but failed to put together an organization that could win a statewide race.

Perhaps there is no scandal here - just honest mistakes and inattention. It doesn't matter. Because of Maddox's leadership, the state party is embarrassed, discredited and broke.

Maddox should get out of the governor's race. Now.

I agree (none / 0)

It may have been an honest mistake but I think he serves everydody by withdrawing his name.

How about being "proved" guilty? (none / 0)

How about waiting to condemn?  I have no clue who is responsible.  Jeb is gloating today, and his favorite paper, the Tribune is calling for Maddox's head.

Why not wait until things are checked out?

I really don't like any of the candidates for governor, so this is not a biased statement.

I agree that we should wait to see what happened.  I'm sure that it will be proven that Maddox did nothing illegal and did not know what was happening.

Still, as the paid party chair he is responisble for what occurred in his office.

It's going to be tough to argue that he should be the state's leader responsible for billions of dollars and thousands of employees when he couldn't keep control over a couple of million dollars and a staff of maybe 15.

I feel that way about the others running. (none / 0)

Sorry, but I do.  Rod Smith is being run by the Florida Mainstream Democrats who are getting a lot of DLC funding.  They say that is their leaning.  Their website sounds more Republican than Democrat in its goals of patriotism and moral values.

I am sure Jim Davis is a good man, but he is New Dem all the way.  His vote for the bankruptcy bill was very sad.  He never responded to those of us who asked for some discussion on this.  He ignored it.  I plan to ignore him next year unless I hear back.

I don't especially care for Scott Maddox, but don't you get the Uh-Oh feeling when the lien comes out when he announces, when Karen and all the state Dems are ready to pounce, and local papers have their talking points all lined up.

Sorry, but I am very skeptical.  Buddy Myers wasn't guilty, but look what happened to him.

Guess what date the lien occurred? (none / 0)

The day Scott Maddox announced.  And just as he is becoming active on the campaign trail, it becomes public.  Many papers have their denunciations ready to go, just peruse today's Florida papers.

Remember how guilty Buddy Myers was?

I have no special love for Maddox, even less special love for Jim Davis.  None at all for Rod Smith.

This is too well-orchestrated to not be planned.

And Jeb's outrage is just outrageous. :(
